The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in order to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. Over 50 women’s human rights advocates from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to include Fellows from additional countries in the future. The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education Course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the LL.M. degree (a U.S. $42,065 benefit) at the Georgetown University Law Center, as well as professional development training.

The International Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRA), USA invites applications for the Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship for Women from Developing Countries in Peace and Development Studies. The scholarship is awarded biennially since the first award made in Groningen, Netherlands in July 1990. Every other year one woman receives school expenses in the amount of $5,000 per year for two years.

The University of British Columbia, Canada partner with the MasterCard foundation Scholars Program to grant $25 Million Scholarships for African students; Over the next 10 years, 77 undergraduate and 35 master’s degree students will go through the Program.
This is a two-year fellowship program for outstanding PhD students nominated by their universities. To be eligible for this fellowship, you must apply during your second or third year of PhD studies. Fellowships are granted by Microsoft Research at the discretion of Microsoft.

Scholarships in UK

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations. Approximately 200-230 scholarships are awarded each year.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Since establishment in 1959, 27,000 individuals have benefited, with 120 to 150 awards every year. Scholarships are open to Commonwealth citizens. Awards are for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD).
For candidates from least developed, low, and lower middle income Commonwealth countries, for part-time Master’s study by distance learning on selected courses offered by UK universities
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious scheme with over 41,000 alumni. In 2011-12 there were over 700 Chevening Scholars studying at universities across the UK. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Chevening awards enable Scholars to study a one-year postgraduate Master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.

A number of Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from developing countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Scholarship winners will study at Oxford University, UK under any undergraduate course of study, except Medicine due to the course length and expense. The scholarship covers University and college fees, full grant for living expenses, return flight to the UK at the start and end of the course per year.
The Wolfson Foundation seek to support excellence through the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in Humanities for international students at University of Oxford. Funding covers 100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs of at least £15,000 per annum. Funds for research and training costs will also be available to scholars.
The Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme cultivates the leaders of tomorrow from transition and emerging economies by providing outstanding university graduates and young professionals with the opportunity to pursue fully funded graduate studies at the University of Oxford and access to a comprehensive programme of leadership development, long-term mentoring and networking. Funding covers 100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs (the rate in 2011-12 was £13,500)
The Clarendon Fund scholarships open to all graduate (Masters, MBA and Doctoral degree) applicants regardless of Nationality for entry into University of Oxford UK. All Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses.

St Antony’s College Oxford in partnership with the international integrated energy company Eni, is offering three students from African universities in Angola, Ghana & Nigeria, the opportunity of fully funded scholarships, including fees and living expenses, to undertake postgraduate study at the Master’s level at the University of Oxford commencing in October 2011. The Eni Masters scholarship is aimed to Strengthening African Leadership.

Each year, the Rhodes scholarship is offered to about 83 Rhodes Scholars selected from 14 countries or groupings of countries around the world (including select African Countries) to study for postgraduate degree at university of Oxford. They are outstanding young women and men of diverse backgrounds and interests who show strong potential to be public-spirited leaders for the world’s future.
The University of Sheffield is pleased to offer a range of undergraduate (BA, BSc, BEng, MEng) and postgraduate scholarships to students from Nigeria who show exceptional academic potential and are starting their studies at the University of Sheffield in September.
The scholarships are worth £6,500 each of your under/postgraduate course tuition fee per year. This will take the form of a tuition fee reduction.

The University of Edinburgh offers one full-time Master’s scholarship for eligible programmes offered by the University through the Edinburgh Global Health Academy Master’s Scholarship for African and Developing Countries. The scholarship will cover the UK/EU “home” rate of tuition fee of up to £5,750.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a Full cost scholarship for postgraduate study and research in any subject at the university of Cambridge England for International students. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is open for Citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally resident outside the USA.

The roots of the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme can be traced back to 1997, when Sir Richard Nichols, then Lord Mayor in the City of London, was particularly impressed during his overseas visits by the high regard in which the City is held by foreign business communities and by the number of students who wished to study in the UK in schools and colleges through business attachments, executive exchanges, and management training. Now firmly established, the Scheme supports the funding of students from overseas taking Masters level degree courses at British Universities or to enable business trainees or officials to undertake study or training in financial and related business activities. Awards vary in size but are usually in the region of £5,000 to £7,500.

Each year, the University of Edinburgh, UK offers up to four Edinburgh Global Health Academy Distance Learning Master’s Scholarship for International students from Africa and Developing Countries. The scholarship is mainly for medical/global health and education related courses. Each distance learning scholarship will have a total value over the duration of the programme of £9,000 which will be deducted from the tuition fee for the entire part-time programme of study.

Scholarships in Other European Countries

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for 12 Developing Countries to study for Undergraduate and Master’s degree programme. The scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses to the amount of SEK8,000 (€878.9799) per month. Scholarship holders within the SI Study Scholarships will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum of SEK 10.000.(€ 1098.7249)
UCSC, Italy offer 12 full Masters scholarships that include tuition and board for students from eligible African countries. 12 full tuition and 39 partial scholarships will be awarded. The full scholarships include tuition and board for the duration of the program. Candidates that do not qualify for the full scholarship may be selected for the partial scholarships that cover part of tuition, whereas all other living costs and travel will be at the expense of the student.
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, India, and TWAS, Italy have instituted a postgraduate fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in Biotechnology, tenable at key biotechnology research institutions in India for a period of up to five years. DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance.

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland offers fellowship programme, open to outstanding young professors from universities from developing and emerging countries in Africa, Asia, or Latin America, pursuing advanced research in areas bridging the fields of international and development studies, broadly defined, and working in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, politics and political science, and economics. Scholars receive a contribution towards living expenses. The Institute will cover costs of travel and visas for participants as well accommodation costs.

The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland). Top academic students have a proven record of achieving consistently high grades in previous studies. Scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fee.

The Nordic Africa Institute (Nordiska Afrikainstitutet), a center for research, documentation and information on modern Africa in the Nordic region offer 20 to 30 Travel Scholarship for researchers on development Issues in Africa with emphasis on Social sciences and closely related fields such as anthropology, History, Economics, Human Geography.Scholarships are intended to cover travel expenses to Africa and to contribute to the cost of local travel and living expenses.

The University of Sydney, Australia offers Undergraduate (Bachelors) and Postgraduate Masters Scholarship for International Students.
Undergraduate: The University of Sydney award 30 scholarships of AUD$10,000 each per annum, available for a maximum of three years, (total value AUD$30,000) for any Undergraduate program offered at the University (subject to the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic progress each year).
Postgraduate: 30 scholarships of AUD$10,000 each, available as a one-off award (total value AUD$10,000) for any Postgraduate Coursework program offered at the University of Sydney.
Griffith University has one (1) $3,000 tuition scholarship for a student from Botswana and five (5) partial tuition scholarships for South African Students – covering tuition for a maximum of two semesters not in excess of AUD$1,500 per semester. The scholarships are on offer to students from Botswana and South Africa commencing in January or July

The Developing Countries Partnership Program on Scholarship or Beasiswa KNB (Kemitraan Negara Berkembang) is offered for the Master Degree Program at one of 12 prominent Universities in Indonesia for 3 years period. The program has been offered, since 2002, to the Master Degree candidates from the developing countries all around the world.

The Government of Taiwan through the Ministry of Education (MOE) has established the Taiwan Scholarship Program for foreign students (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) in an effort to encourage outstanding international students to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world. Scholarship includes Tuition and payment of academic fees, including credit fee. MOE awards each recipient per semester up to NTD40,000.
The Trustees of the Greendale Foundation provide access to the INSEAD MBA programme to disadvantaged Southern (Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa) and East (Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe) Africans who are committed to developing international management expertise in Africa and who plan their careers in the Southern and East African regions.
